Here’s what I discovered – Young Living Essential Oils is a VERY PERSONAL business, built upon two fundamental universal laws – the Law of Abundance, and the Law of Attraction. No ONE WAY will work for EVERYONE. WHY? They don’t always realize that not everyone is designed to be the next network marketing superstar. Of course, everyone has the POTENTIAL to become a superstar, but its all about TIMING. Not everyone is in the right place at the right time to do it.
After all, it worked for MLM giants, 5-10, 15, even 20 years ago, it should still work today? Right?
Well, the last time I checked, the world has moved forward the past 50 years and there’s this amazing thing we have now called technology. Yet 95% of all Young Living Folks aren’t using technology to their advantage.
Is cold calling leads and bugging friends and family is how its always been done, then that is how we should do it today, correct?
After all, you never know WHO MIGHT be interested in Essential Oils, and we all know that Young Living products fit ANYONE and EVERYONE.

I know, you’ve probably read a bit from Ann Sieg’s book, perhaps you looked at Mike Dillard, Tim Sales, and I am sure you’ve read Guerrilla Multi-level Marketing (good stuff to be found in there, by the way). You’ve probably signed on to one of Dani Johnson’s programs as well. And while that’s all well and good to get you some foundational knowledge, they only HINT at what you REALLY need to build a strong downline.
While you may be LEARNING VALUABLE information from these trainers – my point is this: if you’re peddling their programs – you have basically marketed THEIR PERSONAL BRAND AND THEIR PRODUCTS TO YOUR CUSTOMERS – at the expense of YOU and YOUR OWN PERSONAL BRAND and YOUR SELF-IDENTITY in the marketplace. Instead of becoming your own valued and respected network marketing professional, you are just another faceless, nameless person in the crowd all preaching on behalf of the GURUS in the world.
Let me share with you a bit about the REAL underlying reasons you need to consider doing things a bit “differently”.
Ugh. ‘nuff said. Most folks’ biggest REASONS they don’t JOIN network marketing companies is because of this, and it is a tough objection to overcome. Heck, I’m a marketer and I refuse to sell to my own friends and family. In fact, they may know WHAT I am up to, but I don’t push anything I’m working on beyond mentioning it casually in conversations.
My friends, Let me point out the Unspoken Rules of Business Relationship Etiquette.
And they include the following hot topics:
You never talk politics
You never talk religion
You never talk money
and
You never try to “sell” a friend on your business -
UNLESS – the other person brings it up – FIRST. Then you have permission to speak your position, but NEVER in a way that makes them feel like you are out to sell or convert them.
Why is this such a WRONG WAY to go about building a business? From a purely selfish point of view, it just requires just way too much work to CONVINCE someone who is not interested. And frequently, our friends and family, believe it or not, are often our greatest skeptics (at least mine are).
Often, most friends and family are not interested in being sold to or to try and do the same thing, and many just aren’t in the right frame of mind. Additionally – since your friends and family are most often your biggest skeptics, they often just don’t take your advice seriously (unless they’ve come into your life at a time when you have already ESTABLISHED your expertise).
There is just so much time and money involved in CONVERTING someone – time and money that should be invested in attracting REAL prospects to your business. There’s a better way to introduce your Young Living Business to your friends and family (or re-introduce). The truth is, you should ONLY introduce YL to your friends and family AFTER you’ve achieved some success, and not a minute before.
It’s completely BACKWARDS to do it the OLD WAY. You must have PROOF before you can even entertain the possibility of introducing this to your friends and family. It’s your reputation on the line with them, after all.
So, let’s talk about your upline’s first major training call. They are going to teach you how to sell your product. You are going to get business cards, and you are going to get flyers made, and you are going to get brochures. You are going to give everyone not one, but THREE business cards. You are going to tell them all about this great business, and
Best of all….
You are going to tell EVERYONE, because, after all you made a list of your 100 people within your sphere of influence, right?
And I am sure you went through the brainstorm to identify your first 100 leads. You were told to call or contact each one of them. I bet you only got through the first 20 of them, before you ran out of steam.
SO, you were probably asked to:
Get back on the phone, and get in front of ALL your prospects.
Why?
Because your upline is misguided into believing that EVERYONE is a prospect of your company’s products.
That is your biggest failure right there.
You really think everyone’s a prospect? Really? Well if you want to see a .1% return on your investment of time, energy, and money, I strongly suggest you follow this sage advice, but for the rest of us who prefer to see a rather modest return of our investment that runs more into the hundreds or thousands, let’s analyze this a bit more, shall we?
Yeah, sure EVERYONE CAN benefit from what you have to sell… but the truth is…
This has been such an ingrained concept in MLM that I have labeled a CULT.
The truth – yea, everyone might be able to benefit from what you have to sell, and many products have a wide range of benefits to suit the vast majority of most people.
But Marketing class 101 – it all goes back to TARGETING YOUR IDEAL MARKET.
The fact is, you cannot guarantee that EVERYONE is looking for YOUR solution, much less ANY solution for any specific problem they tell you about.
Not everyone is in the frame of mind to buy what you have to sell at the time YOU SEEK THEM OUT.
Not only that, but everyone does not operate on the same wavelength or same level. Now, I am going to make an extreme example here: but do you honestly believe that your uncle who’s lived in the same trailer for 30 years, is a smoker, sits on his porch complaining about how the left wingers are ruining this country and eats a can of beans every day for lunch, is REALLY going to be interested in your organically grown, essential oil-infused nutritional supplements that may cost more a month than what he makes on social security?
I don’t think so.
Now, that’s taking it to the extreme, but think about it this way… what about your old college buddy from 5 years ago who got his MD and is all about the pharmaceuticals. Do you really think you’ll be able to convince him to try your essential oil supplements? How long do you think you’d have to spend WEARING HIM DOWN? Is it worth your time to convince him – EVEN if it’s a huge coo to have him on your team? Is it worth YOUR TIME?
I’ll teach you just HOW to approach the greatest skeptics in your world, and it doesn’t even begin to look like how your trainers have taught you to date. You can talk AT them till you’re blue in the face, you absolutely will not convert him.
That being said let me ask you something else?
Do you know what a worthwhile prospect looks like?
Well, here’s a hint for you – It isn’t EVERYONE you run into…
Bottom line -
People who try to please all of the people all of the time, end up pleasing nobody most of the time, least of all themselves.
So, you need to target…
Time spent educating your downlne, learning from your upline, attending teleconference calls, hosting webinars, hosting parties, conducting followup calls with customers, placing orders, helping people with their new products, introducing new prospects to the opportunity and the products, teaching classes to keep your lead funnel full, the list goes on and on. If you are working a full time job and you are serious about making a SERIOUS profit in your Young Living Business, you need to be prepared to work 10-15 hours a week for the next 6 months to year to get it off the ground.
Here’s a figure most people don’t tell you about: the “average” autoship customer will stay active for 3-4 months and then they’ll drop off. What, you thought they’d join and stay with you forever? It simply doesn’t happen that way. With more and more network marketing opportunities being offered in this day and age, this figure is probably going to get worse. Unless you have fostered an absolutely LOYAL following to both YOU and YOUR Young Living Products, people will simply fade away. You’ll simply need to Factor in indifference, a lack of effort, poor results and a neverending amount of other enticing offers and you’ll be lucky to get them to stay 3-4 months – tops.
So, if “traditional” network marketing approaches aren’t the answer, what is? I’m glad you asked…
FACT:
You need to create a way to brand yourself as an expert WHILE zeroing in on your target market so you CAN attract a wealth of leads wanting you to help them solve their problems, AND you need to be able to do it all WITHOUT WASTING TIME AND MONEY DOING IT.
You see, I WANT you to be successful. Why? Well, quite honestly, it’s a selfish reason. You see, I believe in the importance of PROPER BRANDING and MARKETPLACE POSITIONING. And if we all work together and position ourselves as experts in our own chosen niches – not heavy-handed pushy salespeople – but as knowledgeable and caring EXPERTS who CONSULT as opposed to SELL, who ADVISE as opposed to SELL, who RECOMMEND as opposed to SELL, we set ourselves heads and shoulders above EVERY OTHER NETWORK MARKETING OPPORTUNITY OUT THERE.
If we as a group of professional Young Living independent distributors take an approach to our business that this business requires as much professionalism as a CPA, and we are already as successful as the most successful CEO of a company… if we believe in our knowledge and our products, and we cultivate the skills of asking the right leading questions, listening to their answers and providing guidance and recommendations- all within the legal framework of the FDA and government (not providing diagnosis or promising to CURE anything), we become very highly sought after in our chosen niche markets.
Why? Because IMAGE is EVERYTHING. Because how we position ourselves directly determines our level of success in this business.
Surprisingly, I don’t really believe in competition…because if you work business in the right way – you can avoid market over-saturation altogether and subsequently avoid market attrition.
